Athina Mourelatos

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Athina Mourelatos, beloved wife, mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother, who passed away from advanced heart failure on December 21st, 2023; she left this life, surrounded by loved ones, after fighting the disease for more than a year and seven months (when medical specialists had given her only a couple of months to live); her resolve and strength undisputed to the end.

Born on June 20th, 1936, in Kefalonia Greece, Athina had a very difficult childhood, she lost her father at a very early age, was forbidden from seeing her mother, raised by her maternal aunt, and ultimately subjected to the poverty that befell Greece during the second World War; she lacked for everything... and yet, continued to move forward.

Eventually, Athina immigrated to Canada, and was married to Evangelos Mourelatos on July 6th, 1957, together they had four children, whom she loved with all her heart and supported without question. Despite having left her country in search of a better life, she continued to face many hardships, and, as only someone like her could, she faced them with strength, determination and always with a kind, forgiving and loving nature.

Besides being someone of great character, Athina Mourelatos was one of the truly beautiful people who have ever graced the earth. Loved by all who met her, she was compassionate, sympathetic, loyal and caring. She loved to travel back to her place of birth and more than anything to swim at Lagadakia beach, often swimming out in such deep water that she could no longer be seen. Green was her color of choice, which was fitting considering that she had a ‘green thumb’ and could make anything grow, she spent countless hours tending to her garden and plants. Athina was a wonderful cook and always made sure that anyone who came to her home had a seat at her table. She loved children and took every opportunity to play and spend time with her grand-children and great-grand-children; she was a second mother to them. Playful and fun, she was quick to challenge anyone to a board game or game of cards and always offered to teach others how to crochet. She had an incredible sense of humor, and the sound of her beautiful laugh will be greatly missed by those who loved her, it was infectious, and no one could resist laughing and smiling in her presence.

There is no doubt that this beautiful woman was welcomed into the arms of the angels in heaven with open arms, leaving the people who loved her to mourn the loss of the brightness she brought to their lives forevermore.
