Steve was probably more in tune with his own drummer than anyone I ever had the privilege to spend time with. He was gifted, no just with music, but with people, and understanding. He had a sharp wit, a clever turn of phrase, and an incisive intellect that often cut through to the heart of a thing. He was truly one of a kind. My deepest condolences to his family.

I am so very sad to hear about Steve's death. He has left this world a better place. His joy of life, his kind, kind heart, his care for others, and his exuberance touched us all. His music flowed from him freely, and his talent was evident. I am privileged to have been on the journey through High School with him. I hold numerous fond memories of his antics, humour and kindness. My thoughts and prayers are with you, his family and friends. Debbie Down (-Coppieters)

Always remember Steve as a very peaceful soul. Stuck in my memories is Steve playing a beautiful acoustic rendition of Lennon's "Working Class Hero". It would seem that became his life. My sincere condolences to the Petitpas family.

So sorry to here this terrible news!I was a student at RVR a year younger than Steve.Always thought he was one of the coolest dudes at RVR and admired him without really ever getting to know him there.Later at Champlain College which we both attended I got to chatting with him occasionally and that confirmed what I thought of him in highschool.A truly unique original personality .As a fellow musician I admired his amazing singing voice and great talent as a performer.Later when I started busking in the Metro in Montreal I was elated to see Steve down there occasionally too.Just the fact that he was also busking helped me feel like it was a "legitimate thing to be doing.? I moved to BC in the nineties but stayed in touch with Steve on Facebook. Always read and enjoyed his witty and often hilarious posts. The world is much poorer without Steve walking among us.Rest in Peace,Hope you get to meet all your rock and roll heros in heavan brother

So sad to hear about Steve’s sudden passing. I spent the day remembering all the great times he and I shared in Montreal, St. Bruno, and especially on the mountain. Dug up some old photos that made me smile…all that hair we had! Two things stand out for me about Steve… his wry humor and abundant laughter; but mostly that he always remained true to himself and his love of music. Love and thoughts to his brothers - Wayne, Charlie, Randy and Marc. Remember the good times.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Stephen's passing. We were never very close but I have a collage in my head of the good times we shared so many years ago. Composing songs together, crashing at a half dozen of his apartments across Montreal, painting the town red together (literally and figuratively). I cannot think of a single unpleasant thing he ever did; he was easy going, lighthearted, accepting, forgiving. And so exceptionally positive and appreciative of life. I have an image in my head of a poem he wrote for a school journal we published together. Written in that inimical flowing handwriting of his, it was both mature beyond his years and full of youthful optimism (he was reading Krishnamurti at the time). The last word was ... eternity. Peace, Steve.

I only found out about Steve's passing last night. It was a casual stroll over his facebook page to see why I had not seen any updates from him recently. My connection with Steve began as a Montrealer who would hear Steve play in the metros and on the street where he and his music partner would attract large gatherings of fans. He was as close to a street performer celebrity as there could be. His talent and joy of singing was infectious. I was so taken by Steve's talent that I decided to create a documentary on him and his fellow buskers in Old Montreal. Steve was a genuine lover of music and film and was also a deep thinker. It is still surreal to me that he has left us even as I type these words. Steve told me he believed in the philosophy that we should do that which makes us happy, and there is no doubt to me that he did just that and made many others very happy along the way. My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones.
