Jonathan Conliffe
Jonathan Walter Alexander “Maurice” Conliffe, a devoted husband, beloved father, cherished friend and respected community leader left us peacefully surrounded by family on January 18, 2025.
Maurice was born in Belair, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines on August 3, 1938. He attended Belair Government School before pursuing an education at St. Vincent’s Teacher’s College. Beginning his career as a teacher at Gomea Government School he later transitioned to work as a sales consultant at Baynes Brothers where he showcased his charisma and dedication.
In 1960, he met the love of his life, Cynthia Christabel Cockburn. The two married on August 15, 1963, and then emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Working diligently at Dominion Textiles by day, Maurice attended Sir George Williams University at night, pursuing a degree in Chemistry. His intellectual curiosity led him to discover a love for computers, a field he embraced wholeheartedly. He obtained a degree in computer programming and for nearly forty years, he worked at Canadian Technical Tape assuming increasing responsibilities. When he finally retired in 2009 as manager of IT, he had witnessed the evolution of computers from massive machines that filled a room to powerful devices that fit in the palm of a hand.
Maurice’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a pillar of strength, love and unwavering support in the lives of his daughters Phyllis, Leslie and Stacey. He took immense pride in being actively involved in his children's lives, nurturing their dreams and aspirations with boundless enthusiasm and wisdom.
Beyond his devotion to his family, Maurice was deeply committed to his community. As president of the St. Vincent & the Grenadines Association of Montreal, Maurice was a driving force for positive change and community unity. His eloquent speeches, selfless dedication, and tireless efforts supporting the organization and its activities earned him the admiration and respect of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Maurice had a deep love for music and singing. He was a proud member of both St. Marks Anglican Church Choir and The Barbadian House Choir. His deep baritone voice brought joy to many, and his passion for music was a reflection of his vibrant spirit.
Known for his ever-present big smile and compassionate nature, Maurice lived a life of kindness, integrity and service. His legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Maurice is predeceased by his dear mother, Martha, and beloved wife of sixty years, Chris. He is survived by his devoted daughters, many loved ones, including Cornelius, and lifelong best friend Avil Allen. While his daughters will miss him deeply, they take solace knowing he is now in God’s embrace.
In appreciation for their compassionate care, please consider donating to the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence in Jonathan Conliffe's memory: https://residencesoinspalliatifs.ca/en/donate/
