Michael Salim Rossy

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Rossy Sr., in his 89th year. Beloved husband to Celia Shamy for 60 years, dearly loved father of Michael Jr. (Yasmin) and Judy (Michael DiTullio). He is predeceased by his son John (Connie) and his brothers Theo, Walter, Fred, George, and Edmund. He will be sadly missed by his brothers, Edward and Raymond, and his sisters, Georgette Chacra and Agnes Khoury. He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren David, Jessica, Mark, James, Patrick, Nicholas and Olivia, and his many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Mike, as he was fondly called, graduated with distinction from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. In addition to his academic accomplishments, he served as News Editor of the McGill Daily, the largest college daily in the British Commonwealth at that time. He joined the Canadian Army to serve in World War Two and distinguished himself as a Sergeant Major.

He founded Michael Rossy Ltd., a successful retail chain with 68 stores throughout Eastern Canada. He remained active as Chairman of the Board to the very end. Mike’s passion in life was his business. He strived to teach his employees one new thing about retailing every day. His office door was always open for them and he often referred to his employees as his family.

Mike was a devoted member of the Lebanese community of Montreal, and a life member of St. George Christian Orthodox Church. He served as President of the Lebanese Syrian Canadian Association, President and Life Governor of the Cedar’s Home for the Elderly, and past member of the Board of Trustees of the Archdiocese of North America. He was a strong supporter of Friends for Mental Health (West Island).

He was featured in a television movie “Rossy vs. Walmart”, and in a documentary on “The Main” presented by the Pointe-à-Callière museum.

During his illness, Mike maintained an optimistic and courageous attitude and never stopped fighting valiantly. He summoned his strength from a firm belief in God. He lived his life with complete honesty and respect for his fellow man.

The family wishes to convey special thanks and appreciation to those who gave him care and comfort during this past year, Dr. April Shamy, Dr. David Melnychuk, Dr. Michael Dworkind, Father Anthony, Father Michael, and his dedicated caregivers Asare and Michelle.

Donations to St. George Orthodox Church or to the Michael Rossy Memorial Fund benefiting cancer care at the Jewish General Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
